1) Only "Go Green" if you are actually being "green": Only publicize your event as being green if you are holding your event at a facility that can accommodate such needs. Attendees will question certain aspects of an event if the session was publicized as a green meeting.
2) Recycling: Although this is the most obvious tip, make sure that you check with your event coordinator so that plastic, aluminum, and paper receptacles are present.
3) Reduce paper usage with flash drives: Instead of printing out hundreds of paper hand outs, send out the presentation materials in advance or purchase and load the materials on flash drives for your attendees. Many facilities such as Quest offer a copy station for those attendees that wish to use a paper copy.
4) Reuse name tag holders: For each of your events inform your attendees when they register that they must return their name tags following the event in order to continue to be environmentally friendly. The same idea goes for directional signs, use signs that can be changed, such as using a Velcro arrow, so each sign could be used for a long period of time at various events.
5) Join the Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC): The GMI is a global community dedicated to changing the standards and practices of the events industry to become more environmentally friendly. Log on to their website to join the organization, or visit to find out useful information for your next event.
